May 21, 2006 - Work Day 3

Excavation is complete! All told, I hauled out about 35 heaping wheelbarrows of dirt. I used the dirt elsewhere.

I used a transfer shovel (flat edge) to skim the dirt off the packed dirt below, making for a strong base.

My Dad's bricks are in the grass to the right (encircled by the hose). The NEBCo bricks I plan to

incorporate into the design of the new patio. New England Brick Company, founded in 1898, operated
factories in Massachusetts and New Hampshire until it went out of business in 1952.
Bricks stamped "NEBCo" haven't been manufactured in more than 50 years.

I dug the hole a couple of feet wider in each direction so I'd have plenty of room to work.

Another view of the area, from the pool deck.

And another view, from the yard.

And another view, showing the stacked blocks in the foreground.
