At some point in history, door knob met wall. I'm glad I wasn't witness to *that* argument.
I removed the sloppy patch and started from scratch.
There are a few methods for repairing holes like this, but since the brick chimney is directly
behind the wall, I opted to use it to layer a patch using joint compound.
I layered fiberglass mesh joint tape to reinforce the compound, so it doesn't crack.
Meanwhile, on another nearby patch, I cleaned up some loose material, then scraped off the paper
facing of the wallboard
in a square around the old patch.
I buttered the square with some joint compound, then laid in fiberglass mesh tape as reinforcement.
More joint compound is applied and left to dry. Two more coats of spackle will bring the patch
above the surface of the wallboard, and allow
for it to be sanded smooth.
The first coat of compound dries in the door knob hole.
