Exposing the ceiling joists was not in vain, because it allowed me to install cleats for the bookcases.

The 2x4 cleats fastened to the ceiling and here on the floor will provide rear anchors for the bookcases.

With the cleats installed, the bookcase boxes are dry-fit. Next up, the walls that will surround them.

The cleats create a gap for air to flow behind the bookcase to the A/C return. This will become a duct.

Framing begins to the right of the bookcase.

The framing is set back 1/2" from the bookcase fronts to allow for wallboard later.

This shows the final size of the bookcase and bump-out.
